About Us

The Reading and Writing SISTAZ (RAWSISTAZ) Literary Group (www.rawsistaz.com) was founded by Tee C. Royal on September 16, 2000 and focuses on reading, writing, and discussing books primarily by, for, and about African-Americans.  The group was initially to be a small branch off of the SISTAZ email loop, but because of the overwhelming interest from women outside the organization, a separate entity was needed to accommodate the incoming requests for membership.

RAWSISTAZ consists of the main group (RAWSISTAZ Online Book Club), a literary hang-out (RAW4ALL-- which is open to men), eight local chapters (RAWSISTAZ Live) in major cities across the United States, a team of reviewers (The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers), and a few other entities.  The groups, on and offline, represent close to 500 readers, writers, aspiring writers, and others interested in literacy and the impact on our communities.  The online book club consists of approximately 70 women who are spread across the globe reaching as far as Japan & England.  It is also a "home" for a lot of the members who have established bonds with one another which allow them to call each other "Sis" thus solidifying  the book club motto of "Combining Literature and Sisterhood."

The main motto of RAWSISTAZ Literary Group is "Keeping you In the Know regarding the African-American literary community."

RAWSISTAZ is a valuable resource to those in the industry and those aspiring to be.  They promote literacy amongst the African-American community, encourage authors to follow their dreams and inspire the open exchange of literary information. RAWSISTAZ was selected as one of Writer’s Digest Top 101 Sites for Writers, and has been mentioned in Essence, Black Issues Book Review, Black Expressions, AMAG Magazine, Upscale, and other literary sites and ezines.

Through free newsletters, their various groups, literary services via their websites, and a review team with a repository of 4000+ reviews (www.blackbookreviews.net), RAWSISTAZ is more than a book club; it is a literary legacy
