Good advice. Writing my first manuscript, I too was a seat of the pants writer. It took me a long time, but my next manuscript will have a loose outline. I nearly pulled out my hair during those daunting months of going back and forth. One moment one character wanted to be the main character and then another wanted to take over. Too many voices talking at once. lol. 

I am going to try the suggestions you made and see how thing go for the next manuscript.
