Let’s Talk! Favorite Genres

Written by RAWSISTAZ · June 30, 2009 · 158 views

bb-talks2It’s Tuesday, so time for Black Book Talks.  This week, we don’t have an author scheduled to join us, so we’re going to do a subject topic: FAVORITE GENRES.

Many readers prefer one genre over another, some read several genres, as long as the book is well-written, while others have eclectic tastes and are really particular about their reading choices.

Where do you fall?  Take a few minutes and share with us your favorite genres & why.  Also, include a few titles (and authors) are at the top of your favorites list.

      Hi there, Angelia,
I haven’t read much YA fiction, but I do see it becoming a genre I read more of, just to stay on top of what’s out there in preparation for Miss Joy. From what I’ve read of your blog, I can definitely see this as a favorite for you. You have a way of “teaching” that I love. I’m looking forward to seeing some more YA titles by you.

I fall all across the board on genres. But the ones I will pick up first are Sci-Fi, Political/Legal/Medical Thrillers, Christian Fiction, and Historical Romances. These are my absolute favorites.

    • Tee C. Royal says:

      Hey Brenda,
I didn’t know you liked historical romances.

      • Brenda Lisbon says:

Yes, I do love historical fiction. And you know the bigger the book the better it is.

  3. Sharon says:

I consider myself an eclectic reader. My favorite genres are fiction, Christian fiction, urban lit, romance/erotica, and mystery/thriller/suspense.

    • Tee C. Royal says:

Please share some of your favorite titles, Sharon. (And ummm, which genre don’t you like? You listed most of’em. LOL)

      • Sharon says:

LOL…I don’t like sci-fi/fantasy, horror, poetry, or non-ficition. Some of my favorite titles are: The Someday List by Stacy Hawkins Adams, Song Yet Sung by James McBride, Jewel by Beverly Jackson (my first historical romance), Weeping Willows Dance by Gloria Mallette, White Lines by Tracy Brown, Three Times A Lady by Niobia Bryant.

  4. Tee C. Royal says:

I’m one of those who will read anything if it’s well-written, but my favorites are sci-fi, thrillers, & horror. I especially like psychological, medical & political thrillers. I like these genres because they always seem to bring something new to the table. It’s not the same ole-same ole I see in a lot of contemporary books.

Some of my favorites in those genres are:
    The Tribe by Gregory Townes
The Legend of Morning by TL Gardner & Michelle McGriff
The Osguards: Book 1 by Malcolm Petteway
Pretenses (and Sugar & Spice) by Keith Lee Johnson
    Minion by L.A. Banks
Alex Cross series by James Patterson
    Thunderland by Brandon Massey
The Demon Hunter Series by T.L. Gardner

  5. John Wooden says:

I wish I could say I’m worldly when it comes to genres but I’m not. Mystery/thriller/suspense is easily #1 for me. Being a freelance editor, I am too tired of the relationship genre but if it is well-written, I’m down. Wasn’t a big paranormal.guy until I read Gregory Townes’ The Tribe and been fortunate to read some other stuff from Greg and I like it. Actually writing something now in that genre thanks to Mr. Townes inspiration.

    • Tee C. Royal says:

Woo hoo! Bring it on, John. I have your book on my 30 Books in 90 Days challenge. Now I’ve gotta find it. LOL.

      -Tee

      • John Wooden says:

Tee, what u mean u have to find it…lol…look for it woman, look for it :-) . You know as busy as u are I don’t know how u ever have time to read. But glad you mentioned TL, I really need to get his books. Also, I love me some Eric Pete…

        • Tee C. Royal says:

LOL. We had to do some renovations earlier this year and they packed my office. But, when they unpacked everything else, I decided I’d bring my office books back in, one box at a time. I’ve still yet to get it unpacked. I’ma find it though!

  6. Jaime says:

My favorite genre is suspenseful drama. I love anything that will keep me turning the pages. My favorites authors and titles in this genre are Kimberla Lawson Roby-Sin No More, J.D. Mason-Gotta Sin to Get Saved and Victoria Christopher Murray-A Sin and A Shame. However I’ll read anything that will keep me interested. Can you breifly explain what YA fiction is, please?

  7. LaTreka says:

I love books period. lol. My faves are Sci-fi, romance, and erotica. Ann Christopher who has written a few books has become one of my favorites in romance. In Sci-fi, L.A. Banks has my vote, although I have to check out some of the others Tee mentioned. I haven’t had the time, with work, writing and family. My ‘To Be Read’ book stack is already like the leaning Tower of Pisa. lol. Erotica, I would have to say I don’t have a fav, but Devon Scott is inching to the top as one of the authors I’ll have to watch closely. He has only two books in and I’ve read one and the other is in the To Be Read stack. The one I read though was good.

    • Sharon says:

      I agree….Devon Scott is good!

    • Tee C. Royal says:

Hmmmmmmm, you know that’s a pen name, right? I’m not sure it’s public information, so I won’t share until I confirm.

      -Tee

    • Peaches says:

      LaTreka,
I suggest you move his latest up on your TBR list. I just read it last week and he did not disappoint at all. Enjoy.

      • LaTreka says:

        Peaches,
I’ll try to get to this weekend, since it’s a three day for me.

  8. Criss says:

I read across the genres so it would be easier to tell you what isn’t my favorites. Since that isn’t the questions…My favorites or what I read the most include, contemporary fiction, literary fiction, christian fiction and my interest in YA fiction is continually growning. Overall, I read just about anything except sci-fi/fantasy.

    Criss

  9. Jaime says:

Thanks for the explanation! I haven’t read that genre yet, I plan to one of these days. Any recommendations?

  10. ToniB says:

I am a romance junkie, however I will read all genres. Science fiction and poetry are my least favorites. I will even read those genres if it is the BOM for my local or on line book club.

  11. Peaches says:

I love all types of books. My favorite genres are Fiction, Christian Fiction, Erotica and Urban Lit. Some of my favorite authors in these genre are Eric Jerome Dickey, Carl Weber, Victoria Christopher Murray, Zane, etc.

The genres that I don’t read often are Sci-Fi and Autobiographies. Although I did read E. Lynn Harris’s book, and loved it.

  12. DD says:

As I broaden my reading experience I have been moving into various genres of late that I never thought I would enjoy as much as I have been. For a time I was primarily AA fiction & historical romance with the occasional contemporary romance and mystery novel thrown in. Though I still read these I find myself reading more paranormal, sci-fi, christian fiction, and in general just exploring authors I never would have read otherwise. What I am learning about myself is that it is not as much the genre as it is the author. If the author is good the genre does not matter as much. Though I still go through periods where I need a historical romance or a paranormal romance (did not realize how many of these there were till recently) to just take me to a complete fantasy world.

  13. mary c says:

I used be particular but since joining Rawsistaz, I have been exposed to many genres that I normally would pass by. I am at the point that I will read anything that has a good flow to it. (even those historical romances) My favorite by far though is mystery and crime fiction.

  14. Tabatha says:

Since joining Rawsistaz, I’ve been exposed to various genres. I never thought that I would enjoy science fiction or paranormal but have found some very interesting. I mainly read contemporary fiction but my favorite genre is romance. :-)

  15. Debra says:

I like different types of fiction – urban, urban christian, contemporary novels, and thrillers.

I love reading dating books, how -to, motivational works and different types of non-fiction.

  16. color online says:

I prefer realistic fiction. I read a ton of YA because I run a library for youth. I like historical fiction, sci-fi/fantasy and poetry.
