Book synopsis

Lead Homicide Detective Shevaughn Robinson has gone from the cop everyone, including herself, doubted to the “golden child” of the Portsborough Police Department with a record of sensational arrests and closed cases.

But when Helene Elliott is found dead from an apparent suicide, her family insists it was murder and pressures the Portsborough Police Department to take on the investigation. Detective Robinson is assigned to the case at a time when she is struggling to strike a balance between her personal and professional life following the death of Tony O’Brien, the love of her life. Elliott’s case awakens a complicated relationship with Terri Becker who harbors resentment towards Shevaughn for the death of Eric Becker, the serial killer dubbed Ace of Hearts.

Was the Elliott death a suicide or the work of a cold-blooded predator?  Will life throw Shevaughn another unexpected blow?  And will Shevaughn’s attempts to move forward inadvertently lead death to her front door yet again?

Black Jack is the sequel to Jean Holloway’s acclaimed debut novel, Ace of Hearts. Buckle up and follow Shevaughn as she moves closer to solving the Elliott murder, unknowingly rekindling old grudges and awakening a sinister spirit.  Get ready, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

  2. Joyce Dickerson says:

How awesome is this I had read about her books on a Black Professional Woman site and thought I had bookmarked it because actually I had never heard of her books and was impressed because I also like thrillers I could not think of her name nor the book name, I have been surfing the web trying to locate the info because I wanted to order this book and this morning the famous Tee Royal saved me from all the frustration I had gone tthru trying to get this information thanks so much now I can see what all her books are about and start to read and become a fan….

    • Tee C. Royal says:

You’re silly! I’m so glad to have been of service. Be sure to let us know what you think of the books once you read them.

      -Tee

  3. Sharon says:

I love reading and watching thriller, and I enjoyed Ace of Hearts. What inspired you to write thrillers?

  4. Hi Tee,
I promise you a roller coaster ride. About me? Well, I started writing on a bet w/my sister. The year was 1980. Because I’m an avid reader, she said “You read so much, I bet you could write a book.” I had to take the challenge and started jotting down notes that week. I wanted a book with a strong Black female heroine, so I created Detective Shevaughn Robinson, the 1st Black female homicide detective in Portsborough, NY. You’ll get to know her inside and out as she tries to “do a man’s job.”
I like books & movies that shake me up and then hit me with something I didn’t see coming. I hope that’s the affect my novels have on readers.

    Hi Joyce,
So glad you found me! I’d love to see your opinion once you’ve read ‘Ace of Hearts’ &/or ‘Black Jack’
I hope you do become a fan. In fact, if you do, I have fan pages on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Jean-Holloway/77713788861 or GoodRead.com:

    • Tee C. Royal says:

Okay, Jean, I’m sold! And if it’s not a roller coaster, I’m going to be looking for you. :)

      -Tee

  5. Hey Sharon,

You know I never picked a specific genre to write in, but I guess, it’s because thrillers are one of my favorites and I write for myself 1st. If I don’t enjoy it, I doubt you would. It has to grab you from the very beginning and keep you interested along the way.
I grew up on a diet of mystery, romance, thrillers & horror. In Ace of Hearts, I tried to incorporate them all and I have to say I’m pleased with the results. If you laugh, cry and maybe get a little queasy, my job is done.
OK, now I’m going to look into the gravatar thing. I want a picture, too!

  6. Yeah, the gravatar worked!

Uh, oh, Tee, but I keep my promises, tell her Sharon.

OK, so now you know Ace was handwritten from 1980-82, but it didn’t get published til 2007! Talk about a long pregnancy! LOL
Wonder what took so long? Well, 1st I did all the things they tell you not to do, like mailing unsolicited manuscripts to publishers. Didn’t know how badly I took rejection til then. One publisher even sent me a derogatory personal note comparing Ace to straight porn! Where’s that winking emoticon? LOL
In ‘82 self-publishing wasn’t even an option without spending BIG bucks. So I tucked my tail & went on with the business of working & raising my family. Then in 2005, I had foot surgery and my sister (yep, Lori again, she’s my motivator. I didn’t tell you she’s the one who typed up my manuscript @ night after work!) suggested that since I couldn’t go anywhere for 6 weeks, I should take Ace out, re-edit & see if it would fly. She instructed me to print at least a half dozen copies & paid for me to go to my 1st NBCC, Atlanta’s National Book Club Conference. I met my publisher, Diane Dorce of Firefly Publishing & Entertainment that weekend, had a contract 6 months later and held my baby for the 1st time in 2007!
I think God was teaching me a lesson in patience (everything happens in His time) & it proves that you should NEVER GIVE UP YOUR DREAM!

    • Sharon says:

Amen!!! And that’s a wonderful sister you have too

    • Jaime L. Lincoln says:

Wow! That’s determination if I’ve ever heard it! Glad that things worked out and book 2 is now available. It’s always helpful to have a postive motivator in your corner!!!

I love to read a good thriller and I’m adding you to my list. I hope it keeps me wanting to turn the page to find out what else is going on. If I get something unexpected or I didn’t see it coming, I’m like a kid on Christmas morning!!! Sounds like I’ll get all of the abouve with your books.

Will you be continuing the series? I also like a good series, too!!!

      Jaime L. Lincoln

    • Tee C. Royal says:

How cool is that? I read Diane’s thriller and really enjoyed it. I’ll have to check out her publishing company because I didn’t know she was publishing others. Or maybe I did and forgot. LOL.

But yes, your book sounds like my kinda read. Are they available in eBook format? (Not the Kindle, but PDF)

      -Tee

  7. Dana says:

You ladies are rocking and rolling today.

Ace of Hearts was one of the first thriller books I’ve read. I must say, it was I difficult read for me because I’m not good with blood (smile). However, I couldn’t put it down.

Black Jack is something totally different. I found myself yelling at Shevaughn and trying to anticipate the twists and the turns to come.

You all can access a PDF version of the prologues for both books here: http://www.niapromotions.com/profiles/jeanholloway.

Be warned…it’s adult content and you will know immediately whether you want to move forward in the books.

    • Tee C. Royal says:

What a tease! I hate excerpts…especially when I don’t have the book nearby. LOL. But thanks so much for sharing, Dana! I’m bumping both of these up on my list. Now to find time!!

      -Tee
(Making a note to read during daylight.)

  8. OK, I’m having problems online. ;o(
I know, Lori is very special to me, my baby sister. Now we live only 10 minutes apart!
Most folks fuss @ me because I keep them up later than they intended, so I think it qualifies as a page-turner. Did you check out the excerpts? (thanx, Dana ;o) After reading them, you’ll know if you want to continue or not.
I’m already working on book 3, & yes, my goal is a 4 book series & the ebooks for both ‘Ace of Hearts’ & ‘Black Jack” will be out later this month.

    • Jaime L. Lincoln says:

I’m going to get the book. I like to read exerpts from time to time, then get frustrated cause I want to continue but have to wait until I get the book. LOL!!! If the scenes are a bit much to take, I’ll deal with it. You’ve intrigued me further with knowing there’s a book three on the way and possibly a book four!

    • Tee C. Royal says:

Sorry about the problems, Jean. I’m guessing there were server problems, but I’m glad we made it back. :) My question now is if the books are standalone??

      -Tee

  9. Hey Jaime,

You sound like my kind of reader. You should give me a try.

People have asked where my stories come from & I know it sounds crazy, but I hear voices. My characters speak to me, usually after midnight (especially the bad guys). I think they like keeping me up all night. I was midway through book 2 when my villain turned it all around. I didn’t even see it coming! He made change the title. I’ve tried to outline a story & find it leads to writer’s block when your characters don;t want to do what you have planned.

My favorite character? I love Shevaughn, mostly because she’s a strong Black woman who you’ll know inside & out by the end of ‘Ace’. I had a hard time finding such a woman in other fiction I was reading.

I have to confess I have a thing for my villains. I love the bad guys…but only in print.

    • Jaime L. Lincoln says:

I’m kinda the same way. The worse they are, the better the read to me. I have a history of reading books and getting mad at people that don’t actually exist. LOL!!!

  10. Oh, Jaime, you’re gonna love him, too. Wait & see!

    • Jaime L. Lincoln says:

Girl, stop!! I feel a read-a-thon happening this weekend. I got to get my hands on these books and ASAP, going to check out your jackpot sale rite now. LOL!!!

Btw, thanks for spelling my name correctly!!!

      • You’re welcome, Jaime & I’ll do the same when I sign your books!
I’ve found that 1 of the greatest joys of being an author is meeting new people that I wouldn’t have met w/o my books. I’m always surprised when someone walks up to me @ a signing & tells me how much they enjoyed it. What a rush!
Uh, oh, now hubby is reading over my shoulder. Let me tell you after reading ‘Ace’ he watched me REAL close for a couple of weeks! LOL

        • Jaime L. Lincoln says:

Thank you, thank you!!! Uh-oh, sounds like I need to keep this one hidden from the protectors in my life. LOL!!

          • Jaime L. Lincoln says:

I’ve got to run for now. Thank you for taking the time to chat with us today and I’ll be in touch about my order and to let you know my thoughts. I’ve saved your website to my favorites, so I won’t be searching all over the place for it. LOL!!!

  11. They could be standalone, but I honestly think you’ll get more out of it if you start @ the beginning w/Ace. You see, Ace is Shevaughn’s 1st case & Black Jack picks up 4 years later in her career. This way you can see how she has matured. And me too, for that matter. When I wrote Ace I set myself up for a sequel, but had no idea I would be creating it 26 years later! I admit when I wrote Ace, I wanted to grab the reader & shake ‘em up, so it’s more gory & perverse. Black Jack is smooth & creepy.

  12. Toni says:

Dang, dang, dang, I’m adding more books to my To Buy list, and read list.

  13. mary c says:

I love Crime Fiction!!!! (why I love Walter Mosely) Adding this to my TBR. From the trailer, this should be a movie too.

  14. Well, I’m going to call it a night. This was fun. Remember, if you’re looking for a deal on “Ace of Hearts or the 2 book set, go to http://www.deckofcardz.com/aoh-jackpot-sale. I’ll sign them & mail them to you. If you mention RAWSISTAZ, I’ll throw in a little personal gift.

    Good night, RAWSISTAZ.
    Peace,
    Jean

  15. Dana says:

Thank you Tee, Joyce, Sharon, Jaime, Toni, Mary, and the RAWSISTAZ family for hosting Banned from Vegas with Jean Holloway. Have a wonderful night.

  16. Tee C. Royal says:

I had to tip on on sick call yesterday, but thank you all SO MUCH! I’m looking forward to reading both titles, now. It’s always so much fun to be able to interact with the author (and other readers.)

    So, thanks again Jean!

    -Tee
