GETTING TO KNOW VICTORIA

vic's pic1If you could go back in time, where would you go and who would you like to see?

I would go to Portsmouth, VA to meet my paternal grandmother. She died when I was just three years old. I would love to interview her about what it was like being a black nurse in the 1940’s until she retired.

If you could have dinner with one person, who would it be and why?

It would be with my maternal grandmother. I was just 17 when she died from a massive heart attack. She was my best friend and I miss so much. I would want to have dinner with her so I could tell her I listened to her when she told me to go to school and get my education so I could become “somebody.” I would tell her that I never, ever wore red lipstick again after she told me, “Take that mess of your lips looking like a chicken’s ass.” LOL Her words, not mine. I would tell her how I keep her memory and legacy alive by telling my children, nieces and nephews everything she taught me. I would tell her I love her and my heart still hurts because she’s not here.

Who is the one person in the world you admire the most and why?

I can’t say that I admire one person, because I admire two. And those two people are my parents. I love and admire my mom and dad because they’ve made lots of sacrifices for me and my siblings. My mom was a stay-at-home mother, while my dad was the sole provider for our family. I’m sure it wasn’t easy raising six kids on one income, but my parents made it look easy.  If they were struggling we never knew it. Whenever or whatever we needed my parents always came through for us.

Another reason I admire my parents is because they have been together for over fifty years and are still going strong. Of course they fuss like any other couple, but I must tell you their fussing is like a comedy show. One of them will say something really crazy and the other will burst out in laughter.  LOL! Yep, they’re the best.

My maternal grandmother passed away when I was 17 too. At the most random times I’ll think about her. I miss her dearly.

    Yowza 50 years!! That’s awesome!!

  2. Hi Tee, thanks for hosting me on your blog today. I so appreciate it.

Hey Jen, we truly are sisters of the heart. :) Yes! Girl 50 years! That’s a loooooong time…LOL Thanks for following on my tour!

  3. Thanks for trying to make me cry first thing in the morning! Seriously, I’m a little envious. I wish I had known my grandmothers like that. My maternal grandmother died two months before my 6th birthday. My mother always said I had ways like her. My paternal grandmother died the day before my 22nd birthday, and honestly, I never really knew her that well as she lived in upstate Pennsylvania and we lived in Ohio. What I do remember is she was always a grande dame and always treated me with kindness.

And for those that haven’t picked this book up, if you are a romantic fan, it is a MUST READ!!! Enjoyed every page of it!

  4. Hey Gayle, thanks for swinging by and sharing. You should be proud because you are an AWESOME grandmother. And you definitely inherited your grandmother’s kindness. :) So glad you enjoyed Karen and Dom’s story.

  5. Darlene says:

Hey Victoria, I’ve been truly blessed to have grown up with and had wonderful relationships with both my maternal and paternal grandmothers. My maternal grandmother passed away after I was married from complications with alzheimers, and my paternal grandmother passed at the age of 94. I remember spending summers with both of them. I too miss them very much!

Enjoying the tour…..Have a blessed day!

  6. Hey Darlene – you are really blessed to have had your grandmothers for so long. I know how much you miss them. So glad you’re enjoying the tour and following every day. Love ya and thanks for your support.

  7. Hello Victoria,

The people I most admire are two ladies, My mother and my daughter. My mother as my foundation and my daughter as the home built on that foundation. I see me in both of them yet their own individuality shines forth in a blaze. Buried momma 4 years ago today, so this is poignant day for me.

  8. Hey Rhea, thanks for sharing your story. Today I hope you are thinking about the happy times with your mom. Thanks for your support and following the tour. :)

  9. Beverly says:

    Hi Victoria -

You have such wonderful memories of your maternal grandmother and I see your paternal grandmother also had an influence on you even though you were young when you passed as you are a nurse.

I too have wonderful memories for both my grandmothers and use them as an example for my being a grandmother.

  10. Hi Beverly – Grandmothers are the best! I bet your grandkids just love you! I’m enjoying having you follow me on tour! Thank you so much for your support!

  11. Hope says:

Hi, Victoria. Great interview! We have something in common; my parents have been married for over 50 years as well. They are coming up on year 55 next month!

Unfortunately, I never knew either of my grandmothers. After witnessing the bond between my son and my mother, I know that I missed out. Thankfully, I have/had plenty of older aunts to stand in the gap. :-)

  12. Ni says:

I loved the choice of your parents for all the reasons you listed. People like them do exist and they deserve honor and praise.

  13. Hi Hope! I love your name. Our parents prove that love can be a lifetime. God blessed me too with other older women who stood in the gap for me as well once my grandmother passed on.

Hi Ni, thank you! I was truly blessed with awesome parents. I love them to pieces :) Thanks for stopping by.

  14. Toni says:

Awesome interview, brought tears to my eyes and wonderful memories of my grandmothers. They were both amazing ladies whom I miss with each passing day.

  15. Brenda says:

    Hey Victoria
Great interview you had a lot love and great advice from your grandmother. I never met my maternal or paternal grandparents. I have always been envious of others who had that grandparent love. Your grandparents and parents I’m sure are very proud of you your a wonderful sista and thank you for sharing your writing gift with us readers.

  16. Hi Toni – So glad you enjoyed the interview. I’ll say it again, “Grandmothers are the best!” It sounds like you had amazing grandmothers. I am happy that you had such an awesome blessing in your life.

Hi Brenda – Thank you so much for your kind words. I know that they’re proud of me. I always let my parents know if it weren’t for them guiding me I would not be where I am today. I was blessed to have parents who wanted to see their children succeed in life. It’s a shame, but not all parents want this for their children.

Thanks Toni & Brenda for stopping by!

  17. Louise says:
