Jessamine by Eugenia O’Neal (Book Spotlight)

Jessamine

Last night, while Julian was in his study working on a speech, I’d sat on the verandah listening to the crickets when, behind me, I heard something like a faint sigh just before the headache struck again, driving through my brain like a javelin. Fear squeezed my throat and wouldn’t let go. I thought maybe I was having some kind of seizure. I couldn’t talk, couldn’t call for help, couldn’t move. Against my cheek, my right cheek, I suddenly felt a cold sensation exactly as if someone had pressed a glass of cold water or maybe their chilly palm to my face. I was paralyzed, my heart like a frightened bird, beatings its wings against my chest. After what must have been minutes, seconds even, my heart rate slowed and I sank back down into the rocking chair, trying not to feel so damn terrified.
Something’s happening to me but I don’t know what.
